One focus of the Musikverein's current season is dedicated to Clara Schumann's flower album. She kept dried flowers in this booklet and gave it to her dearest friend Johannes Brahms with a personal dedication.

"La cheminée du roi René" comes from the music for the 1939 film "Cavalcade d'amour" by Raymond Bernard. A love story is told three times at different times: in the late Middle Ages, 1830 and 1930. The music was written by Milhaud, Honegger and Desormière. Darius Milhaud chose the version from the Middle Ages and composed a version for woodwind quintet, which can be heard this evening.

Franz Schubert's Introduction and Variations on his song "Trock'ne Blumen" from the cycle "Die schöne Müllerin" is a highly virtuosic work that demands a great deal from both performers. Schubert probably composed it at the suggestion of a flutist friend for his circle of friends.

In the second part of the concert, the recipient of the flower book himself has his say as a composer. At this time, Brahms was working on Mozart's serenades and Haydn symphonies. He composed this cheerful serenade as a nonet for wind and string instruments.
